America’s liberal roots

The city was originally created by explorers from Spain, who decided to make the area into a livable region. There were many prospectors and families of men looking to become wealthy from the Gold Rush. This highly increased the population of San Francisco, as well as its economy and reputation. San Francisco even became the most densely populated region in the west coast at one point. The early 1900s brought devastation to the city, as an earthquake rattled through, destroying most homes and buildings.

A rampant fire made sure that just a little over half of the city stood after all was done. During World War II, San Francisco offered its services by becoming a major port area in the U.S. The city was also where the United Nations were formed, giving the world a glimpse of its interest in creating world peace. San Francisco’s unique history makes it one of the most forward-moving cities in the world. From the 1960 era of the hippies to being against the Vietnam War, this city has shown its liberal ways.
