Magnificent wildlife

Missing out on the wildlife on any trip to Africa would be terrible, and South Africa is no exception. The Kruger National Park is the most popular destination for those hoping to catch at least a glimpse of the Big Five, but there is also a growing number of smaller private reserves and game parks if you’d prefer a more personal and tailored option. While the Big Five are the largest draw of South African safaris, there are lots of other animals you can see. These include zebra, giraffe, hippo, and cheetah, and Kruger National Park in particular is known for its packs of endangered African wild dogs, of which there are apparently only 400 in the South African wild.

An adventure playground

For those seeking adventure, South Africa is the place to go. Cape Town alone has an abundance of activities on offer, but there is something exciting to do wherever you travel. Shark cage diving is incredibly popular and one of the main reasons why people head to South Africa. However, if getting that close to such dangerous creatures doesn’t appeal, you could choose to get up-close and personal with the other marine giants who make their home off the coast by joining a whale watching tour. Other thrilling activities you can take part in include paragliding, horse riding, bungee jumping, and hiking. If you fancy doing something a little bit more unusual, you can even try your hand at ostrich riding!

World-class wine

Aside from its fantastic wildlife, South Africa is most famous for its world-class wine. There are, of course, vineyards all over the country, but perhaps the most famous of them are those in the area of the Cape Winelands. You could easily spend a few days just driving around the region, sampling the wonderful offerings from the different wineries. In addition to the delicious wine, the Cape Winelands is also known for its outstanding beauty and if you don’t drive, the roads are excellent for cycling.

Fascinating history

When talking about South Africa, it would be hard not to mention the difficult struggle the country’s people had against apartheid. There are a number of sites throughout the country, particularly in Cape Town, Pretoria, and Johannesburg, where you can learn more about this part of South Africa’s history. A visit to Robben Island prison is highly recommended; just off the coast of Cape Town, it was in this prison where Nelson Mandela was held for the majority of his sentence prior to the fall of apartheid.
